A session underway at World Food India

Prime minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fourth edition of the global mega food event, World Food India (WFI) 2025, on September 25, 2025, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

Organized by the Ministry of food processing industries (MoFPI), this event is being held from 25 to 28 September 2025. It aims to showcase the transformative potential of the food processing sector and position India as the “Food Hub of the World.”

In his address to the gathering, the prime minister highlighted the importance of having farmers, entrepreneurs, investors, innovators, and consumers all present, emphasizing that World Food India serves as a platform for new connections and creativity. After touring the exhibitions, he expressed satisfaction with the focus on nutrition, reducing oil consumption, and enhancing the healthiness of packaged products.

Modi was joined by Union minister of food processing industries Chirag Paswan and numerous stakeholders from the food and allied industries.

World Food India features CEO roundtables, technical sessions, exhibitions, and various business interactions, including B2B (business-to-business), B2G (business-to-government), and G2G (government-to-government) meetings. The event showcases 21 exhibiting countries, including France, Germany, Iran, Australia, South Korea, Denmark, Italy, Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan, Belgium, Tanzania, Eritrea, Cyprus, Afghanistan, China, and the USA, with over 150 international participants.

Multiple thematic sessions cover a range of topics, including India’s role as a global food processing hub, sustainability and net-zero goals in food processing, advancements in the food processing industry, India’s pet food sector, processed foods for nutrition and health, plant-based foods, nutraceuticals, specialty foods, and more.

The prime minister stated that the government is strengthening the food and nutrition ecosystem by engaging all stakeholders. He noted that the food processing sector is being actively promoted, with 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) now permitted. He added that the sector has benefited from the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and the expansion of mega food parks.

Modi affirmed that India is currently implementing the world’s largest storage infrastructure scheme, highlighting that these governmental efforts are yielding results. India’s processing capacity has increased twentyfold over the past ten years, and exports of processed food have more than doubled.

Emphasizing the need for biodegradable packaging, Modi remarked that while it is crucial to keep products fresh and of high quality, it is also essential to fulfill our responsibility toward nature. “The government has reduced the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on biodegradable packaging from 18% to 5%,” he stated, urging all industry stakeholders to invest in innovations related to biodegradable packaging.

Among other events, the Ministry of tourism is organizing a grand culinary celebration titled ‘World Food India – Reviving the Culinary Treasures of India’ at Bharat Mandapam. This four-day event showcases the richness of India’s culinary heritage and aims to position the country as a global leader in sustainable food innovation. The program seeks to revive forgotten food traditions, highlight ancient cooking techniques, and explore the export potential of indigenous ingredients. It brings together media professionals, food critics, influencers, international buyers, bloggers, and distinguished guests.
