Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan reviews district-wise contingency plans and fertilizer availability.

Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan chaired a high-level review meeting in New Delhi to assess preparedness for the Kharif 2026 season. The discussion focused on strengthening the agriculture sector in light of a possible El Niño impact, with an emphasis on safeguarding farmers and ensuring continuity in production.

The minister highlighted the need for proactive planning in districts likely to face low or uneven rainfall in the Kharif season. Officials were instructed to identify vulnerable areas and prepare crop-specific contingency plans in coordination with state governments. The aim is to ensure farmers receive timely guidance, alternative crop options, and practical support if weather conditions become challenging.

Special focus was placed on water conservation, moisture management, inter-cropping, and diversified farming practices. The minister stressed that each risk-prone district should have a tailored strategy so that farmers can continue their activities without disruption during the season.

In states expected to be more affected by El Niño, coordinated meetings will be held involving district magistrates, agriculture departments, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, and extension systems. These efforts will also include farmer awareness campaigns, ensuring clear, science-based, and solution-oriented communication reaches the ground without creating unnecessary alarm.

The meeting also reviewed crop targets and sowing plans, with a strong push toward increasing cotton production. The minister called for a mission-mode approach, promoting better seed selection, scientific farming methods, mulching, and moisture-retention techniques to improve both yields and farmers’ incomes.

Progress on the self-reliance in pulses initiative was another key agenda item. Efforts are being intensified to boost domestic production of pulses such as pigeon pea, black gram, and moong. This includes expanding cultivation areas, improving seed access, and enhancing technical support to reduce reliance on imports.

Fertilizer availability, reservoir levels, and market trends were also reviewed. The minister assured that fertilizer stocks are sufficient and directed officials to ensure smooth and timely distribution, especially in areas where shortages may arise at the local level.

He concluded by stressing the importance of coordination between agricultural institutions, research bodies, and state departments. Continuous monitoring, regular feedback, and effective knowledge transfer to farmers will be essential to ensure a stable and successful Kharif season.
