Bengaluru-based Cothas Coffee showcased its instant coffee powder, cold beverages, decoctions, and coffee beans at the Sial exhibition held from 5 – 7 December in New Delhi’s IICC. The 75-year-old company, which produces these coffee products at its plant in Bengaluru, has filter coffee as its core business.
Cothas Coffee supplies its coffee products across India and exports to some countries. In the Indian retail market, the company operates through its channel partners, Abhijit Dasgupta, Zonal sales manager – B2C (North & East) told IndiFoodBev, adding the company has a wide network of super-distributors, distributors and sub-distributors.
About the competition from startups in the coffee segment, he said, “Competition is always good and it provides us an opportunity to assess our strength in the coffee segment in India. We have a 75-year legacy in the southern states, though we are comparatively new to the northern, western and eastern zones. As our core strength is filter coffee, we were initially concentrated in the southern part of the country. Now that we have launched instant coffee and cold beverages, we are expanding our presence throughout India.”
Its USPs are the premium quality of its products and its wide distribution network, Dasgupta said, adding the packaging for Cothas Coffee is outsourced to vendors in Bengaluru and other cities.
“The Indian coffee industry has been growing phenomenally and so is the filter coffee market. Initially, filter coffee concentrate was a South-centric product, now it’s finding takers in other cities in India as well. A recent survey has regarded filter coffee as the second-best coffee in the world. Coffee culture has taken off in tier-I and tier-II cities in India along with the metros. Coffee chains are introducing new flavors and varieties. However, much experimentation cannot be done with filter coffee as it loses its traditional charm,” he concluded.
