Kannur-based Malabar Coconut Products is a 15-year-old company dealing in coconut products from the Malabar coast. The company lends a helping hand to coconut farmers in Kerala by promoting high-quality coconut-based food products. The company, marketing its products under the brand name Malabar Haico, showcased its fermented virgin coconut oil, coconut milk cream, coconut chips, coconut vinegar, and desiccated coconut powder at Aahar Delhi in March. The stand was part of a small pavilion promoted by the Coconut Development Board.
Jayaraj P Nair, CEO, Malabar Haico told IndiFoodBev, “Coconut is a very healthy product. We started our company as a means to provide value addition to coconuts. In our coconut milk cream, we do not use any other ingredients apart from coconuts and a preservative. We use retort pouches sourced from Noida for packaging.”
The company’s production facility is based in Payyanur in Kannur district of Kerala on a 10,000-square foot area spread across two floors. It uses 4,000 kgs of coconuts per month to produce its products. Deshelling, squeezing, powdering and dehusking machines are used to manufacture the products.
“We don’t face much competition as there are only 4 or 5 Kerala-based companies dealing in coconut-based products,” Nair said while pointing out that the state had the resources to support at least a hundred such companies as people are gradually warming up to the idea of coconut-based products.
Many Keralities have been using food processors and traditional kitchen equipment to produce coconut milk and desiccated coconut powder for improving the texture and taste of traditional Malabar cuisine recipes, Nair said, adding that packaged coconut products have provided a quick and easy solution to these home chefs.
Hindus from all over India offer coconuts in temples due to this purity, Nair said. Coconut chips do not use oil, he said, adding while the consumption of fried chips may cause constipation, dried coconut chips smoothen bowl movement due to the high fiber content.
Apart from Kerala, the company supplies its products to some parts of Tamil Nadu along with Bengaluru. Malabar Coconut Products participated in Aahar to reach distributors in North India.
Nair said he plans to expand production and add more coconut-based products to Malabar Haico’s product range. He also plans to capture markets beyond South India and venture into exports.
