FSSAI cracks down on use of industrial dye in roasted chana

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched a nationwide enforcement drive against the illegal use of Auramine, an industrial dye, in roasted chana and other food products.

The dye, typically used in textiles and leather, is banned under under the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011.as it poses serious health risks.

“Since, its presence in any food renders the product unsafe under Section 3(1)(zz)(v) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, it is directed to conduct targeted enforcement actions including inspections, sampling, testing and subsequent actions of roasted chana, and other similar food products which are vulnerable to such adulteration, in organised, unorganised sector and e-commerce platform who are involved in manufacturing, processing, storage, distribution, transportation and sale of such food articles (sic),” the FSSAI order said.

FSSAI has directed all State and Union Territory food safety commissioners to conduct inspections, sampling, and testing across markets and eCommerce platforms. Strict action will be taken against violators, and authorities have been asked to submit an action report within 15 days.
