A day after India and the United States finalized a trade deal and Washington reduced tariffs on Indian goods to 18%, the Union Government stated that India had secured a favorable agreement without compromising its sensitive agricultural and dairy sectors. Details of the deal, however, were not available.
Union commerce and industry Minister Piyush Goyal said India’s core agricultural and dairy interests would remain protected, addressing long-standing concerns over greater US access to politically sensitive sectors such as soybean and dairy. He noted that these sectors, shielded so far, would continue to enjoy safeguards, multiple news media reports said.
Goyal said the deal would create new opportunities for farmers, fishermen, the poor, and the youth, adding that the agreement was in its final stages and a joint Indo-US statement would soon outline its contours. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman welcomed the tariff reduction, saying it would boost Indian exports and help access new markets.
