In a significant boost to India’s agricultural exports, three metric tons (MT) of GI-tagged Indi Lime from Vijayapura district, Karnataka, were shipped to Oman on 19 December 2025 — marking the fruit’s entry into yet another international market. This follows the maiden export of 3 MT to Dubai on 24 August 2025. Encouraged by a positive market response in the UAE, exports to Dubai subsequently rose fourfold to nearly 12 MT.

As part of ongoing market diversification efforts, a consignment of 350 kg of GI-tagged Indi Lime was also flagged off to the United Kingdom. Cumulatively, exports from Vijayapura have now reached approximately 12.35 MT. The latest shipment to Oman holds particular significance in light of the recently signed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and Oman, which aims to deepen bilateral trade and expand market access for Indian exporters.

The CEPA is expected to benefit key sectors — including agricultural and processed food products and animal produce — thereby enhancing India’s export competitiveness in the Omani market. The successful shipment of GI-tagged Indi Lime exemplifies the growing opportunities for Indian agri-products under this strengthened trade framework. The fruit’s Geographical Indication (GI) status, highlighting its distinctive aroma, high juice content, and longer shelf life, has been instrumental in positioning it competitively in global markets.

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) continues to play a pivotal role in promoting, branding, and facilitating the export of GI-tagged agricultural products. Its initiatives ensure that region-specific produce meets international quality and phytosanitary standards. The export success of Indi Lime from Vijayapura has improved income realization for local farmers by providing access to premium international markets and reducing dependence on domestic price fluctuations.

The growing international acceptance of GI-tagged Indi Lime underscores India’s potential as a reliable supplier of high-quality, region-specific agricultural produce, opening new avenues for farmers and strengthening the country’s agri-export ecosystem.
