Wheat procurement during the RMS (rabi crops marketing season) 2025-26 is going on smoothly in the major procuring states. According to government estimates, against an estimated target of 312 LMT (lakh metric tons) fixed for the procurement of wheat during RMS 2025-26, so far 256.31 LMT of wheat has already been procured in the central pool.

The quantity of wheat procured till 30 April this year has already surpassed last year’s total procurement of 205.41 LMT on the same date, showing an increase of 24.78%, a government release said. All five major wheat-procuring states, such as Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, have procured more wheat this year compared to last year.

A total of 21.03 lakh farmers have already benefited during RMS 2025-26 with a total MSP (minimum support price) outflow to the tune of Rs 62,155.96 crore. The major contribution in the procurement came from Punjab (103.89 LMT), Haryana (65.67 LMT), Madhya Pradesh (67.57 LMT), Rajasthan (11.44 LMT) and Uttar Pradesh (7.55 LMT).

With a sufficient duration of the procurement period still left in RMS 2025-26, the country is well on course to surpass last year’s figures by a substantial margin, the government said. The rabi marketing season typically occurs from April to March but sometimes extended till June or July.

The positive outcome in wheat procurement this year has been a result of concerted efforts by the department of food and public distribution, starting from preparing state-specific action plans based on learnings from previous years, which were shared with the states well in advance.

Actionable items such as raising awareness among farmers, registering farmers, preparing procurement centers, and timely paying MSP to farmers were regularly followed up with the respective states via review meetings to remove potential bottlenecks. In most cases, the MSP payment was made to farmers within 24 to 48 hours.

The department’s measures also include mandating stockholding limits through the wheat stock portal, granting timely approvals for the relaxation of FAQ Norms, and sending officers to districts to facilitate timely action as and when required.
