
In the Union budget 2025, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on 1 February 2025 announced support for food processing with the establishment of a National Institute of Food Technology in Bihar as well as enhanced income for the farmers.
“The institute will provide a strong fillip to food processing activities in the entire eastern region. This will result in, one, enhanced income for the farmers through value addition to their produce, and two, skilling entrepreneurship and employment opportunities for the youth,” she said.
Sitharaman also announced a special Makhana Board in Bihar to improve the production, marketing, and value addition of makhana in the state.
The minister announced the Pradhan Mantri Dhan Dhanya Krishi Yojana, or the developing agri-districts program, which will cover 100 districts and is likely to help 1.7 crore farmers.
