French bottled water and dairy group Danone was on 9 January 2023 taken to court over its use of plastic across the supply chain, with environmental groups accusing it of failing to sufficiently account for all the plastic used along its production cycles.

NGOs ClientEarth, Surfrider Foundation Europe, and Zero Waste France filed a lawsuit against the company, saying it was not doing enough to reduce its use of plastic and called for greater transparency.

The company, which owns the mineral water brand Evian, refuted the claims.

Danone, the world’s biggest yogurt maker, which also produces infant formula, has a presence in 120 countries, including India.

Danone was named, alongside Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Nestlé, as one of the world’s top 10 plastic polluters, according to a brand audit in December, The Guardian reported.

Growing concerns over environmental pollution due to plastic have prompted a tremendous rise in alternative sustainable packaging solutions that look and feel like traditional plastic but can be composted at end of life.

According to the UNEP, the world produces about 400 million tonnes of plastic waste every year.
