Hosokawa Micron Group, a global leader in solids processing technologies, highlighted its newly launched Alpine Microbust (AMB) jet mill at Anuga FoodTec 2025 in Mumbai. In a conversation with IndiFoodBev, Ashwin Jagmohan, senior application engineer, team food and feed at Hosokawa, gave insights into the company’s offerings, the machine’s USP, and its growing focus on the Indian market.

The company specializes in powder and particle processing technologies with applications across food, feed, chemicals, minerals, and pharmaceuticals. Its broad portfolio includes milling machines, grinders, pulverizers, mixers, drying systems, flash mill dryers, vacuum batch dryers, sterilizers, and agglomeration systems. “We have machinery to process food, chemicals, and minerals into powder. That’s what we basically do,” Jagmohan explained.

The Alpine Microbust jet mill is specifically designed for ultra-fine powder processing. “It’s a milling machine for ultra-fine powders of about 10 microns. It uses no rotating pieces; it is all about using air pulses and jet pulses,” Jagmohan said. The technology employs a cyclonic movement with centrifugal forces, ensuring the finest particles are efficiently separated and extracted.

Jagmohan said the machine’s strength is its compactness. It is particularly relevant for high-value applications such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and specialty chemicals. The AMB allows for efficient fine grinding without mechanical parts, making it suitable for sensitive materials where contamination needs to be minimized.

Hosokawa in India

In India, Hosokawa has a strong base through its operations in Chennai, where it manufactures the UPZ milling machine. In the Indian market, the company is primarily into spice grinding and food milling solutions, though it also supplies equipment to the pharmaceutical sector. “Our portfolio in India is mainly about milling and grinding. Sometimes we sell a dryer for pharma, but it’s not much,” Jagmohan said.

According to Jagmohan, with India emerging as a booming market, Hosokawa sees immense potential for expansion. “India is number one in scaling. We expect fast growth for the coming 10 years. If we don’t invest in India in terms of a whole test facility, or maybe a bigger factory, we will miss orders,” he said.

Jagmohan acknowledged the steady progress of Indian-built machinery. He noted that in the coming five years, domestic manufacturers may reach European quality standards, which makes it compulsory for Hosokawa to strengthen its foothold and maintain its competitiveness.

Looking ahead, he remains optimistic about the opportunities, both globally and in India. “We are already lifting the standards, but we have to show up more. That’s what I think,” he concluded.
