Flipkart eyes food delivery entry

eCommerce major Flipkart is said to be gearing up for a push into online food delivery, with a pilot in Bengaluru likely around May–June 2026, the financial media reported. The planned entry would put it head-to-head with Zomato and Swiggy, as the company broadens its consumer offerings ahead of a proposed public listing.

The management is weighing two routes—launching a dedicated food delivery app or operating as a buyer-side application on the government-backed open network for digital commerce (ONDC). A final call hasn’t been announced yet.

If the Bengaluru test gains traction, a broader expansion may follow by late 2026 or early 2027. The company plans to lean on Flipkart Minutes, its quick commerce arm, which runs more than 800 dark stores and already delivers groceries and electronics in as little as 10 minutes. Speed will be central.

Flipkart’s current portfolio includes Flipkart Minutes for hyperlocal delivery of fresh vegetables, fruits, snacks and dairy in select cities. It also operates Flipkart Kilos (formerly Grocery), which focuses on bulk staples and daily essentials with longer delivery windows, typically at wholesale pricing. In addition, the platform sells ready-to-eat and packaged food items from brands such as Haldiram and MTR through its standard eCommerce channels.

The proposed move would position the Walmart-owned ecommerce major squarely against Zomato and Swiggy in a food delivery market valued at about US$9 billion in FY25 and expected to reach US$25 billion by FY30, according to Jefferies.
