The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued more than 150 notices in the recent past to prominent food and beverage companies, including big names such as Nestle India, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola India, Danone, Mondelez, top liquor majors as well as five-star hotels over misleading advertisements, false claims, and non-compliance of labeling regulations, the regulator stated in a social media update.
Twelve notices have been issued to major eCommerce platforms such as Amazon and Flipkart—leading to the cancellation of one Amazon warehouse license. Over 30 notices and five license suspensions have been issued to food chains such as Domino’s, McDonald’s, KFC, Pizza Hut, Costa Coffee. Five licenses of Domino’s have been suspended.
Notices have also been issued to five-star hotels and restaurants for non-compliance related to calorific value disclosure, menu labeling, etc.
FSSAI also moved to halt sales of well-known rum and whiskey brands—including Old Monk, McDowell’s No. 1, Royal Challenge, and VAT 69—over allegations of unauthorized flavoring, misleading labels, and non-compliant packaging materials, following which they moved court.
While the regulator confirmed that several companies have initiated corrective measures, public health advocates emphasize that notices alone must translate into stricter accountability to protect ordinary shoppers from manipulative marketing.
FSSAI also seized products from manufacturers of energy drinks and alcoholic beverages for failing to meet statutory benchmarks.
