The ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) has partnered with Nasscom, a non-governmental body representing India’s IT industry and an advocacy group, to take technology to farms with the aim of enhancing crop productivity and quality and reducing risks to farmers.
According to a businessline report, MeitY-Nasscom Centres of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Gurugram, and Visakhapatnam are being utilized to enable farmers.
MeitY has established Centres of Excellence (COEs) in the areas of Internet of Things (IoT) and AI on a public-private partnership model. The CoEs, supported by the government and industry, are a nationwide program to identify innovators and nurture those innovations.
It collaborates with various industries for the large-scale adoption of newer technologies. Some of the industry verticals under focus are — Manufacturing for industry 4.0 solutions, automotive, healthcare, agriculture, energy, and other industry verticals.
The 2016-launched CoEs are working with several start-ups and teams across the country to share information on AI, IoT, robotics, and blockchain applications in different industry domains of manufacturing, food technology, agriculture, and others. Primarily to avail cost-effective solutions to farms and to facilitate quick adoption.
The projects on agriculture began around 4 years ago with a focus on the detection of diseases to get the optimal price in the marketplace. MeitY-Nasscom has completed several projects on farms, the most recent in Ahmedabad, where detection has helped farmers secure better prices for their yield. Another project emphasized early detection of pests and to bring them under control with drone imagery.
Furthermore, AI and IoT can detect if there has been excessive water for the crops and provide solutions for optimum irrigation. These technologies use images of crops, such as tomatoes or rice, from high-resolution cameras to help in understanding how the produce is shaping up.
Leveraging its relationship with startups and several agri-tech organizations, the MeitY-Nasscom collaboration has several ongoing projects to inform farmers about better communication, soil detection, quality enrichment, and utilizing modern tech to enhance production and supply chain.
