The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced a new mandatory logo for all approved vegan food products, aiming to make plant-based items easier for consumers to identify. Under an amendment notified on 21 May 2026, food businesses must display a standardized green āVā symbol with a leaf motif and the word āVeganā on packaging.
The rule, which takes effect from 1 July 2027, is designed to create a uniform identity for vegan products, prevent mislabeling, and strengthen consumer trust. Only foods free from all animal-derived ingredients, including dairy and honey, will qualify for the label.
The amendment has been made under the Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Amendment Regulations, 2026.
FSSAI stated that the amendment follows the consideration of objections and suggestions received from the public after the draft regulations were published in 2022.
The regulator has also specified detailed design parameters to ensure consistency across products. These include defined dimensions for the āVā symbol, text size, spacing between elements and the overall size of the bordered logo. The aim is to standardize how vegan identity is communicated across brands and product categories.
FSSAI clarified that only food products meeting its definition of vegan will be eligible to carry the label. Vegan foods must not contain any ingredients, additives or processing aids derived from animals. This includes the exclusion of dairy products, honey and other animal-based components.
Once implemented, the mandatory logo is expected to streamline identification of vegan products across retail shelves, both online and offline, while strengthening compliance standards in Indiaās evolving food sector.
