Mondelez International, Licella Holdings, and Amcor have merged operations in Australia to build advanced recycling facilities in Australia to create a circular economy for plastic waste. The aim is to replace virgin plastics with recycled ones in packaging to create sustainable growth by 2050. This is a win for our consumers and the environment, having the ability to recycle soft plastic wrappers again and again, the company said.

In a major step towards achieving a global goal of net zero waste and ambition to create a circular economy for plastic waste, Mondelez International, one of the largest snacking companies, recently announced having joined forces with global leaders in responsible packaging.

Amcor, a global provider in developing and producing high-quality, responsible packaging solutions for food, beverage, and pharmaceutical, and Licella Holdings, a pioneer in advanced recycling technology for a lower carbon future, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mondelez in construction of one of the first advanced recycling facilities in Australia. The development license for the new facility was also approved.

Darren O’Brien, president of Mondelez Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, said “Since I’ve been a part of Mondelez International I’ve found sustainability to be in the DNA of the company. The merger, aiming towards a circular economy of plastics by 2050 aims to replace virgin plastic with recycled packaging to be developed at the recycling facilities. The company had put in place a target of 30 percent recycled content in its packaging last year but had to import the recycled plastics because Australia did not have an advanced recycling facility.”

“Our vision is for sustainability to be embedded into all of our plans and ways of working, as we strive to build the most sustainable snacking company,” he added.
