In the suppression of the previous order dated 24 February 2020 the display of ‘Date of Manufacturing’ and ‘Best Before Date’ in case of pre-packaged and pre-packed sweets, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a notification making it mandatory for sweet shops to declare the ‘best before date’ of all sweets available in the shop.
“In the public interest and to ensure food safety, it has been decided that in case of non-packaged and loose sweets the container or tray holding sweets at the outlet for sale should display the “best before date” of the product mandatorily with effect from 1 October 2020,” the order states.
However, the food business operators (FBO) may display “date of manufacturing”, which shall be purely voluntary and non-binding. “The FBO shall decide and display the “best before date” of sweets depending upon the nature of the product and the local conditions.”
An indicative list of the shelf life of various types of sweets is given in the guidance note of traditional milk products’ safety, which is given on the FSSAI website. All FBOs dealing with sweets shall comply with the above directions, and the commissioner of food safety of all UTs or states ensure compliance of these directions.
Instances have been reported of stale and expired sweets being sold to customers. Consumption of these items may lead to potential health hazards. In light of these instances, the Food Safety and standards authority of India (FSSAI) has issued directions (order dated 24 February 2020).
