The Smart Warehousing System was inaugurated by Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and New & Renewable Energy, in the presence of Smt. Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya, Hon'ble Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.

To modernize India’s foodgrain storage infrastructure, the government has launched a Smart Warehousing System powered by advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). The initiative was unveiled at Bharat Mandapam by Union minister for consumer affairs, food and public Distribution Pralhad Joshi.

Described as the world’s largest deployment of AI and IoT in public sector foodgrain storage, the system has already been implemented across 215 warehouses operated by the Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC). The Food Corporation of India (FCI) is also expanding the system to 150 additional warehouses.

The new platform integrates a range of smart technologies, including FASTag and ANPR-based gate automation, geo-tagged smart locks, AI-enabled bag counting, facial recognition, and IoT-based environmental monitoring. It also features surveillance systems capable of detecting fire, smoke, and rodent activity, alongside automated record generation and analytics through ERP integration.

Officials say the system will improve operational efficiency, reduce vehicle turnaround time, enhance transparency, and enable real-time monitoring of warehouse operations. It is also expected to strengthen compliance and improve workforce productivity.

Addressing the event, Joshi highlighted the government’s focus on technology-driven reforms to strengthen food security. He noted that improved storage systems would benefit farmers and ensure better service delivery to over 80 crore beneficiaries under the Public Distribution System.

The event also recognized the top 20 performing warehouses under the Depot Darpan framework and saw the release of several publications on foodgrain management.

The initiative aligns with broader national programs such as Digital India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, marking a significant step toward a more efficient and resilient foodgrain management system.
