For its first Cannes Lions in 2026, Brooklyn-based creative agency Tavern decided against the usual festival swag. Instead, it used the week as an excuse to launch an entirely new drinks brand.
The result was Cannes Royale, a collection of five 12% ABV Champagne cocktails created through Tavern Labs, the agency’s in-house platform for developing and launching new products and brands. Made exclusively with French products and packaged in compact 222 mL cans, the range was conceived specifically for Cannes and produced in a limited run of 15 cases.
All 15 were gone on the first day
The idea began with a piece of wordplay that was almost too obvious to ignore. Cannes sounds like “cans,” giving Tavern the line “Cocktails in a Cannes.” Rather than leave the concept at the level of a festival giveaway, the agency approached it as it would any new-to-world beverage assignment, developing the liquid, sourcing ingredients, designing the brand and packaging, and taking the product through small-batch production.
At the center of the range is a French classic: the Kir Royale. Champagne forms the base, with the five expressions drawing on products sourced from across France. Every component of the drink is French, turning the collection into a small tour of the country that ultimately ends where so many French summer journeys do: on the Riviera.
The 222 mL format was also deliberate. Rather than default to a conventional RTD can, Tavern wanted the package to feel closer to a single cocktail serve. A typical spritz lands around 180 mL, leaving the CannesRoyale with a little extra. The agency’s explanation is suitably less technical: you’re in France, you’re on holiday and the porter shouldn’t have to come back quite so quickly.
Visually, Cannes Royale takes its cues from the French Riviera without falling into straightforward retro pastiche. Typography, illustration, color and small historical references give the cans the feeling of something that could have belonged to Cannes for decades, while remaining unmistakably contemporary.
Among those details is a Croix de Guerre-inspired symbol referencing Canon Félix Kir, the priest, French Resistance figure and later mayor of Dijon whose name became attached to the combination of white Burgundy and crème de cassis. That drink eventually evolved into the Champagne-based Kir Royale.
For Tavern, those layers were important. The objective was not simply to put an agency logo onto a drink, but to build enough depth into the product for it to operate as a real brand in its own right.
Cannes Royale made its debut at the House of Brand Transformation during Cannes Lions, where Tavern was speaking. The agency arrived with three cases of each of the five flavors. By the end of the first day, there were none left.
The response reinforced a larger idea Tavern had been exploring about Cannes itself. As the festival has expanded beyond the Palais into beaches, villas, houses, dinners, talks and brand activations across the city, the distinction between attending Cannes and creating something for Cannes has become increasingly blurred.
For a branding agency, that creates an obvious challenge. A deck explaining how you think can only go so far. The objects, spaces and experiences surrounding the conversation can demonstrate the same philosophy far more effectively.
Cannes Royale became Tavern’s experiment in doing exactly that: taking what could have been a promotional touchpoint and treating it with the same level of consideration as a client launch.
That experiment is also becoming considerably larger.
Following its 2026 debut, Tavern plans to return to Cannes in 2027 with a house of its own. The agency is developing the space as a home for programming, hospitality, new ideas and the growing group of creatives, operators and founders moving from making work for brands to building businesses themselves.
More details on Tavern’s Cannes 2027 plans will be announced through The Weekly Pour, the agency’s newsletter.
For now, Cannes Royale offers a preview of the philosophy behind it.
