SED helps sugar refinery capacity expansion for Shri Dutt India

Spray Engineering Devices (SED), a global provider of sustainable industrial engineering solutions, has successfully commissioned a landmark sugar refinery capacity expansion and energy optimization project for Shri Dutt India (SDIPL)’s facility in Kandla, Gujarat, India.

Executed in 12 months, the project scaled the sugar refinery’s capacity from 1,000 tons per day (TPD) to 2,500 TPD, without requiring any additional boiler investment.

Among the fastest large-scale expansions in India’s sugar sector, the project establishes a new benchmark for rapid, energy-efficient industrial scaling. By modernizing existing infrastructure rather than adding capital-intensive utilities, SED demonstrated how significant capacity growth can be achieved sustainably, even under aggressive timelines, the company said in a release.

Vivek Verma, managing director, Spray Engineering Devices, stated, “This project demonstrates the capability of our latest Batch Crystallisation Pans to operate at extremely low Delta T levels. By optimising heat transfer, we enabled Shri Dutt India to more than double its output while retaining its existing steam generation infrastructure, reinforcing that engineering innovation is central to sustainable industrial growth.”

At the heart of the project is SED’s proprietary integration of Mechanical Vapour Recompression (MVR) with Batch Crystallisation Pans equipped with Honeycomb Calandria technology. Operating at an ultra-low temperature differential (Delta T) of just 20–25°C, the system maximizes heat transfer efficiency while substantially reducing steam consumption.

By eliminating the need for new boiler infrastructure, the sugar refinery achieved a 2.5x capacity expansion with a significantly lower carbon footprint, underscoring that technological innovation, not added utilities, is key to sustainable industrial growth.
