Koehler Paper, part of the Koehler Group, added to its flexible packaging paper portfolio last year with the launch of products for use in the fast-food industry. Consumer demand for sustainable products and packaging has been evident in the fast-food sector for some time now, which is why system catering is also increasingly looking for solutions in this field.

In October 2022, Koehler Paper launched Koehler NexPlus Wrap, a paper designed for burger packaging with extremely low grammage, onto the fast-food market. Then, with Koehler NexPlus OGR, the company also brought an oil- and grease-resistant, sustainable paper onto the market, which is suitable for packaging foods such as fries, sandwiches, wraps, and burritos. The solutions that were originally launched as Koehler NexPure paper have now been developed further and are available with immediate effect as Koehler NexPlus paper. These products are now entirely free from acrylates

With Koehler NexPlus OGR and Koehler NexPlus Wrap, Koehler Paper, a leading provider of paper with a disruptive barrier function for packaging solutions, has developed its fast-food paper further and brought it more into line with customer demand for sustainability. These products are now not only made without the use of fluorochemicals, as they have always been but also without the use of acrylates, making them a sustainable and environment-friendly alternative to the packaging paper currently used in the fast-food sector.

Christoph Wachter, head of the Flexible Packaging Paper division at Koehler Paper, says: “With this evolution, we have produced sustainable fast-food packaging that is entirely free from acrylates and fluorinated chemical coatings while offering the same properties as packaging that does include these. This ensures that the paper is also fully recyclable.” It exclusively uses pulp from certified sustainable forestry and controlled sources as its fiber material.

Innovative barrier properties ensure high grease resistance

Back in 2019, Koehler Paper invested 300 million euros in flexible packaging paper with its new production line 8. Since then, the largest MG paper machine in the world has been producing flexible packaging paper with barrier coatings with a wide range of functions. These include, in particular, odor, grease, mineral oil, and even oxygen barriers. Paper produced by Koehler Paper is ideally suited for use as packaging: The paper really delivers in terms of the primary purposes of packaging: to protect the contents and their surroundings as well as provide excellent processing properties. Koehler has achieved high grease resistance of KIT Level 7 with its new paper Koehler NexPlus OGR.
