At the recent SmartCard Expo in Bengaluru that took place from 16 to 18 December 2021, Avery Dennison displayed its intelligent label solutions. At the event, which took place after a gap of two years, the company’s manager for Marketing Communications for South Asia, Prabhsharan Kaur said that the ‘Intelligent Labels’ showcased at the expo, are used in diverse industries, from retail and food to healthcare, entertainment, libraries, and aviation. She added, “Intelligent labels are an efficient method of tracking and tracing inventories, they make the supply chain more efficient and serve the customers in a better manner through RFID tracking systems.”

Intelligent or ‘smart labels’ inlaid with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology are one of the active and intelligent packaging solutions that can prevent the counterfeiting of products and also help in their efficient logistics. As Indian society intensifies its needs for the precise identification and movement of products throughout the supply chain, the infrastructure for reading RFID is gaining ground. RFID tags and labels are visible on our car windshields, on food, pharma, and luxury product packaging, and in our baggage tags for air travel.

Avery Dennison offers RFID inlays as well as technical, training, and testing resources at its demonstrations lab in Pune in India where it has advanced research and testing capabilities, and experienced engineering resources for its comprehensive Smartrac solutions. The global company has tie-ups with many of the best-in-class chip and reader manufacturers, label and tag converters, and systems integrators. Most of the company’s inlays feature its patented SmartFace Technology, one of the most sustainable solutions that reduce a brand’s environmental impact.

Avery Dennison Corporation claims it’s the first and only pre-qualified intelligent label provider to receive the How2Recycle label for its RFID paper hang tags. The qualification is based on How2Recycle’s parameters of applicable laws, collection (access to recycling), transportation (MRF package flow), reprocessing (technical recyclability), and end markets. The company is currently developing UHF and HF RFID solutions, designed for inventory management, loss prevention, and enhancing consumer engagement.

In our recent coverage, we have described, Avery Dennison’s launch of several smart tag technologies. It launched its new AD Midas Flagtag EM4425 DF tag for metal surfaces, combining UHF and NFC functionality for superior tracking performance coupled with enhanced consumer engagement capabilities. In December 2021, the company launched its AD TT Sensor Plus 2 BLE, an active temperature-logging sensor that utilizes Bluetooth and Near Field Communication technologies.

Avery Dennison also sponsored and presented its active label solutions in the Smart Packaging Solutions for India and South Asia virtual conference held in March 2021. The day-long event attracted food, alcobev, and pharma packaging professionals and converters. The event was a part of a global AIPIA series organized jointly by Noida-based IppStar and the Active and Intelligent Packaging Industry Association based in Amsterdam.
