Four fertilizer ships cross Strait of Hormuz

Four cargo ships carrying critical consignments of urea, Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP), and sulphur successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz last week. Despite ongoing global trade disruptions, the vessels are now en route to key ports—Krishnapatnam, Kakinada, Paradeep, and Mundra. On arrival, the shipments will be promptly offloaded to reinforce existing buffer stocks and support the country’s agricultural needs.

Comfortable Inventory Buffers

As of 22 June 2026, India’s total fertilizer stock stands at a strong 196.08 lakh tons, up from 168.67 lakh tons during the same period last year. The current stock includes 81.44 lakh tons of urea (69.21 lakh tons last year), 20.92 lakh tons of DAP (16.0 lakh tons), 55.91 lakh tons of NPKs (46.13 lakh tons), 12.68 lakh tons of MOP (10.68 lakh tons), and 25.13 lakh tons of SSP (26.65 lakh tons last year).

Reflecting robust agricultural activity, total fertilizer sales between 1 March and 21 June, 2026, reached 153.4 lakh tons, an increase of 13.2 lakh tons compared to 140.2 lakh tons in the same period last year. This includes 79.1 lakh tons of urea, 34.8 lakh tons of NPKs, and 19.8 lakh tons of DAP (including TSP).

Domestic Manufacturing Support

To shield farmers from global market volatility, the government has ramped up domestic production alongside calibrated imports. Post-crisis domestic output rose significantly to 133.12 lakh metric tons, while imports during the same period reached 43.69 lakh metric tons, ensuring a balanced supply mix.

Global Tender Milestone

India has secured 17.70 lakh metric tons of urea through its latest global tender. With this, total contracted volumes of urea and P&K fertilizers for the ongoing Kharif season have crossed 90 lakh metric tons.

This large-scale procurement effort was supported by coordination with 28 Indian missions abroad, enabling diversified sourcing across multiple regions. Urea supplies have been secured from countries including Oman, Malaysia, Vietnam, Georgia, Nigeria, Russia, Finland, Egypt, Algeria, Turkey, and the Netherlands. Meanwhile, DAP and NPK supplies have been routed via the Red Sea corridor from Russia, Morocco, Egypt, the USA, Jordan, South Korea, Tunisia, and Saudi Arabia.

The department of fertilizers continues to work closely with state governments, distribution agencies, and cooperatives to maintain a stable and well-managed fertilizer supply across the country.
